Why upgrade to Shopify 2.0

If you run a Shopify store you might have heard already that last year Shopify launched the new Shopify 2.0.

After developing a few new websites on Shopify 2.0 and moving a few existing ones to the upgraded version I can say I’m loving it!

So why move? What are the benefits?

Here are my top reasons:

  1. Flexibility in design: all free themes (and of course paid themes) now include a large range of sections including video, testimonials, banners.

  2. More flexibility with section styling. Now with 4 different options you can have a different colour scheme for different sections

  3. Pages – you can now create page templates for each page on your website making pages more flexible. If before you could only add copy and images to a nonproduct page, now you can add sections and create creative pages on the site – not only home as it was before.

  4. Metafields – with metafields you can now add information in tabs for each product (not only a description) – for example a cosmetic store might include the ingredients list that is different to each product. This was only possible before with coding and now once set up as a meta filed can be easily added / updated with no coding skills.

  5. Add content to collection and product pages – you can now easily add a section such as newsletter registration, videos and galleries to the product & collection pages.

What is involved in upgrading?

A new Shopify 2.0 theme will need to be installed and therefore new design and upload of home page and all other pages as well as design and set up of product pages.

Product information as well as blogs will stay so there is no need to re-upload.

There is a new set of FREE Shopify themes to select form and if you have a paid theme most offer a free upgrade to the 2.0 version so no need to pay again if using the same theme on 2.0.

Regarding pages – you can leave as is or re-create them on 2.0 with more sections (recommended).
