| Social Media Marketing | ||
What is it? |
The growth of social media has impacted the way organizations
communicate with their customers. Social media marketing programs usually centre around efforts to create content that attracts attention, generates online conversations, and encourages readers to share it with their social networks. The message spreads from user to user and presumably resonates because it is coming from a trusted source, as opposed to the brand or company itself. Social media has become a platform that is easily accessible to anyone with internet access, opening doors for organizations to increase their brand awareness and facilitate conversations with the customer. Additionally, social media serves as a relatively inexpensive platform for organizations to implement marketing campaigns. Organizations can receive direct feedback from their customers and targeted markets. Wikipedia definition |

Platforms of Social Media Marketing |
The most popular platforms for Social Media Marketing include
Facebook/My Space, YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter & Blogs. So, what is the difference and which one to use? Each is a bit different from another and works in different ways for businesses. Some businesses use all and some use only one. Here is a snapshot: |
Facebook is a social networking website. Anyone over the age of 13 with
a valid e-mail address can become a Facebook user. Users can add friends and send them messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves. To date, there are more than 400 million active users worldwide and 50% of active users log on to Facebook in any given day. The largest age group of users is 35-54. |
| Businesses can create a 'Fan Page' where users can become 'fans'. This provides the opportunity for businesses to communicate to customers on a regular basis. 'Fans' can comment on posts which means it is a two way communication tool with customers. | ||
| ||
Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that enables
its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are short
(max 140 charecters) text based posts displayed on the author's profile
page and delivered to the author's subscribers who are known as
followers. Twitter is not a social network, but it's an information network. It tells people what they care about as it is happening in the world. |
| Twitter is increasingly used by businesses to promote themselves. Short messages offering promotions, arrival of new stock etc. | ||
| LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site. It is mainly used for professional networking. Although LinkedIn is not as popular as Facebook, what it lacks in numbers it definitely makes up for in quality of its users - it is used very much by company CEO's, Management and other high flyers. | ||
| LinkedIn is all about business networking, in fact, many businesses who use LinkedIn do their recruiting on this site. It is more about personal networking in the business community - in your industry. If you are a professional with your own businesses, it is worth while - you never know what sort of opportunities will come up! | ||
![]() Blogs |
| A blog (a contraction of the term "web log") is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. The ability of readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. There are a few blog sites /platforms around, Blogger is one of these them. | ||
| A blog can be used as a tool for a business to update customers with news, new products, articles, pictures etc. It is a great way to keep your website up-to-date by linking it to your blog which is easy to update from any computer and is free. It is a good way to share your professional knowledge with clients or any internet user and gain credibility in your field. | ||
You Tube |
| YouTube is a video-sharing website on which users can upload, share, and view videos. It is used by individuals and businesses and is regularly featured in news. YouTube is already the largest search engine after Google! | ||
| Business can easily upload videos to promote product, messages, how-to videos etc. It is very easy to link You Tube videos from a company's website which makes it a great communication tool, easy to use & free! | ||
